Welcome to Charter Oak Books

Welcome to Charter Oak Books

"The greatest university of all is a collection of books."
Thomas Carlyle (1795 - 1881)

Welcome to the home of Charter Oak Books. Please search or browse our inventory of hard-to-find, out-of-print, used, rare, and signed and inscribed books.

Our Inventory:

Charter Oak Books has a general stock mostly of out-of-print books, in condition ranging from collectable first editions, including books signed by the author, to reading copies.

Our Mission:

We strive to make every customer a repeat customer by:
(1) helping you find the books you want in the condition you expect at a fair price,
(2) insuring every order at our expense, and
(3) giving you a 20% discount on every order after your first.

Who We Are:

The owner of Charter Oak Books, Marcia Goodman, is a librarian with a Master of Science in Library Science (M.S. in L.S.) degree from Syracuse University, and an attorney with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law.

Marcia's first career was as a university librarian, when she often commented wistfully about how much more she enjoyed being in bookstores than in libraries. Then came law school, after which she practiced law for several decades, most of which as a government attorney, helping people. She was finally able to make her dream of having her own bookstore into a reality.

Marcia's focus is helping people find the books they seek. As described below, she specializes in helping book collectors find and obtain books for their collections, or to start new collections, by using her national network of sources.

Book Search Services:

If you don't find the book you seek, we invite you to click on "Book Search Services" on the left side of this web page, and complete the form. We will then search our as yet uncataloged inventory, as well as our national network of sources to find the book you want.

Services for Book Collectors:

We specialize in helping book collectors find books for their collections, and we welcome your inquiries. You may e-mail us at info@CharterOakBooks.net or telephone us at 203-362-8807 to tell us about your collection or about the collection you would like to start.

Notice to Customers About Charter Oak Books' Listings on Amazon.com:

Charter Oak Books has terminated the sale of our books on Amazon.com. The reason is that Amazon.com sells two magazines that promote cockfighting: "The Feathered Warrior" and "Gamecock" magazines. Amazon.com is apparently the only Internet retailer of these publications.

Cockfighting is a blood sport in which roosters, affixed with knives or hooks, battle each other, often to the death. It is banned in 48 states.

Based on Amazon.com's practices, which promote the torture of animals, we at Charter Oak Books do not want to contribute in any way to its profits and therefore have removed our inventory from Amazon.com.
