9 The Church for Americans Brown, William Montgomery - INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR
New York, New York, U.S.A. Thomas Whittaker 1902 12th Edition Hard Copy Very Good+ No Jacket 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall Inscribed By Author
501 pages. Inscribed by author in 1903. Revised and enlarged 12th edition; later printing. From the Preface: "The concern which this book manifests for the Ecclesiastical side of Christianity and the little it has to say about its spiritual and practical apsects, is due to what the writer considers to be, just now, the special religious need of our time and country. This is not instruction in the moral requirements of Christianity so much as the establishment of the fact that Christ founded a Church which has come down to us, and with some branch of which it is the privilege and duty of all to identify themselves....[I]t becomes a matter of first importance that the duty of belonging to the National branch of the one Apostolic Church of Christ, and the evil of separation from it, should be set forth in season and out of season. In proportion as this is done, the Episcopal Church will be built up and held together." Book is in Very Good+ condition - light general wear; foxing on edges. Gift wrap and gift card available.

13 The Shepherd of the Hills Wright, Harold Bell
Branson, Missouri, U.S.A. Shepherd of the Hills Historical Society 1987 0970260903 / 9780970260901 Hard Copy Near Fine No Jacket 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall Signed by Actors
The Shepherd of the Hills Historical Society, Branson, Missouri, 1987. Inscribed on the front end page and front fly leaf by 17 actors who were part of The Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Theatre in Branson, Missouri in 2003. Book is in Near Fine condition. From the publisher: "Originally published in 1907, 'The Shepherd of the Hills' is Harold Bell Wright's most famous work . . . . Wright spins a tale of universal truths across the years to the modern-day reader. His Eden in the Ozarks has a bountiful share of life's enchantments, but is not without its serpents. While Wright rejoices in the triumphs, grace, and dignity of his characters, he has not naively created a pastoral fantasyland where the pure at heart are spared life's struggles and pains. Refusing to yield to the oft-indulged temptation of painting for the reader the simple life of country innocents, Wright forthrightly shows the passions and the life-and-death struggles that go on even in the fairest of environments that man invades." Gift wrap and gift card available. The shepherd, an elderly, mysterious, learned man, escapes the buzzing restlessness of the city to live in the backwoods neighborhood of Mutton Hollow in the Ozark hills. There he encounters Jim Lane, Grant Matthews, Sammy, Young Matt, and other residents of the village, and gradually learns to find a peace about the losses he has borne and has yet to bear. Through the shepherd and those around him, Wright assembles here a gentle and utterly masterful commentary on strength and weakness, failure and success, tranquility and turmoil, and punishment and absolution. This tale of life in the Ozarks continues to draw thousands of devotees to outdoor performances in Branson, Missouri, where visitors can also see the cabin where the real Old Matt and Aunt Mollie lived." The book, originally published in 1907, was made into a movie of the same name in 1941 with a cast including John Wayne, Betty Field, Sammy Lane, Harry Carey, Beulah Bondi, Marjorie Main, and Ward Bond.
