Masterpieces of Australian Bark Painting Ruhe, Edward L. Albany, NY, U.S.A. University Art Gallery, State University of New York at Albany 1973 Soft Cover Very Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Unpaginated (24 pages). Soft cover. Book is in Very Good condition: light scratches on front cover; light edge wear; binding is tight and pages are clean and bright. Catalog of an exhibition of aboriginal art from Arnhem Land, organized by Edward L. Ruhe, University Art Gallery, State University of New York at Albany, April 2 through 29, 1973. Contents are: Introduction by Edward L. Ruhe; The Art of Yirrkala; The Art of Milingimbi; The Art of Western Arnhem Land; and The Art of Other Tribes. 20 illustrations, 19 of which are b/w. From the Introduction: "The present exhibition emphasizes artistic values rather than ethnography, thus taking advantage of the new widespread receptivity to unexplained art created by so much of contemporary European and American painting. From that point of view the accomplishment of the bark painters has extraordinary interest. It derives from a culture which does not entertain an idea of art or recognize artists as a class of men. If it did, it would no doubt relegate such ideas to the world of the non-sacred or trivial, along with most of the activities of everyday life. The anthropologist A. P. Elkin wrote of bark paintings as 'windows' into aboriginal minds. What we may see is confidence in a known, controllable, largely benign universe; a set of traditional ideas supporting a fully traditional and essentially stable society; and a religion which, whatever our private responses, clearly fits the capacities of men."
