Book is in "Fair" condition: front and rear hinges cracked; several signatures starting to loosen and center pages of one signature are loose; tear in cloth at head of spine; narrow strip of cloth missing at tail of spine; spine cocked; corners bumped and worn through; gilt print on spine "The South [design] Illustrated"; prior owner's name handwritten on 3 front free end pages. Laid in is an apparent receipt, with a preprinted year 1880, in the amount of $.06, for what appears to be "S. Lib. sampler & [unreadable]" with handwritten notes on the reverse side of the receipt The full title of this book, as it appears on the title page, is: "The South: A Tour of Its Battle-Fields and Ruined Cities, a Journey through the Desolated States, and Tallks with the People: Being a Description of the Present State of the Country -- Its Agriculture -- Railroads -- Business and Finances -- Giving an Account of Confederate Misrule, and of the Sufferings, Necessities and Mistakes, Political Views, Social Condition and Prospects, of the Aristocracy, Middle Class, Poor Whites and Negroes. Including Visits to Patriot Graves and Rebel Prisons -- and Embracing Special Notes on the Free Labor System -- Education and Moral Elevation of the Freedmen -- Also, on Plans of Reconstruction and Inducements to Emigration. From Personal Observations and Experience During Months of Southern Travel."
