Harvard University Class of 1939 Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Report Cambridge, Massachusetts USA Harvard University 1964 Hard Cover Very Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 1121 pages. This 1964 publication details the lives of 1939 Harvard graduates 25 years later. For most graduates, there are two photos ("then" and "now") as well as autobiographical update. The class of '39 included Leonard Bernstein, who wrote, "The notion of writing even the briefest autobiography fills me with dismay. I have read so many accounts of my life thus far that I can hardly bear to think about it any more. I therefore apologetically submit the attached 'official' biography, which I earnestly hope will meet your needs" which is 3+ pages in length. The class of '39 also included Cleveland Amory (2 photos and an almost 2-page autobiography). The volume also includes various reports and indices, and includes a 4-page article entitled "1939 - The Last Nice Guys" by Cleveland Amory. 30 members of the class had died in service in World War II, and the volume is poignant in reading about them. Note that the title on the title page includes "Harvard University" while the spine refers to "Harvard College".The book is in Very Good condition -- corners are bumped; foxing on edges and rear end pages; a little discoloration on exterior front board; slight musty smell. Gift wrap and gift card available. Price:

Alan Wurtzburger Collection of Pre-Columbian Art Baltimore Baltimore Museum of Art 1958 Apparent First Edition Soft Cover Very Good+ 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall 46 pages. 107 illustrations. Foreword by Adelyn D. Breeskin. Introduction by Dore Ashton. Notes on the Collection by George Kubler. Book is in Very Good+ condition - light edge and cover wear. From Notes on the Collection: "The clearest grouping of ancient American art is by geographical origins and by time divisions. The Wurtzburger Collection has accordingly been divided into eight regions; whenever known, the individual objects have been dated according to the early, middle, late, or terminal periods. The African and Oceanic sections of the Wurtzburger Collection required no datings because of the great rarity of ancient pieces from these areas, largely due to the perishable nature of most of the materials used. The American collection spans about two thousand years. The oldest objects, pottery figurines from Tlatilco near Mexico City, were probably made within a century or two of 500 B.C. The most recent items are of course the Aztec and Inca manufactures, made by craftsmen in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Mexican objects are catalogued under central, western, southern, and eastern headings . . . .In Central American, two regions are represented: the Maya area (Yucutan and Guatemala); Costa Rica and Panama. South American archaelogy is represented by objects from Columbia and Peru." Price:

A Dialogue With Objects: Objects of Isaac Monteiro 1959-1996 New York Privately Printed 1997 Soft Cover Very Good 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Privately printed, New York, 1997. Book is in Very Good condition - ex-library (Hillyer Art Library) with only library markings being small stamp (1-1/4" wide by 5/8" high) in upper right corner of front cover and artist's last name underlined; chip at top of spine; light corner wear. 6 color and 49 b/w illustrations. From the artist's introduction: "My objects are artistic in that they dwell on everyday situations and on universal human emotions. Taking this into account, I came up with an idea: why not give these works an inner voice and have 'them' speak for themselves? Why not let them explain and expand on what they are and how the viewer or participant (if physical help is required) can help them perform their artistic objectives. (A few objects are still described in the normal literary style.) To finalize, my objects are what they are. They do not pretend to be anything else. They are not part of a manifesto or a movement. They are self-sustained objects that were created by a human being for others to see, experience and touch." Price:

What's Happening in SoHo University of Maryland Art Gallery 1971 Soft Cover Very Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall University of Maryland Art Gallery, 1971. unpaginated (36 pages). Catalog of an exhibit at the University of Maryland Art Gallery on October 21 - November 28, 1971. Book is in Very Good condition - ex-library (small stamp on front cover saying "Hillyer Art Library" along with a date stamp and some writing; no other indications anywhere in the book that this is ex-library); scratch marks on front cover; corner wear. 15 b/w illustrations, including the front cover. From the Preface: "There is no SoHo school of painting or sculpture, and the present exhibition, which represents work by about one-tenth of one percent of the artists who live there, does not attempt to suggest such a school. It was planned rather to reveal something of the vitality of this newly developed community of artists. Several generations of living artists have settled in SoHo. The oldest generation represented there includes artists whose careers began in the thirties; Louise Nevelson, for example, has a studio in Spring Street, and Adolph Gottlieb, in West Broadway. The artists in the exhibition are of a younger generation; their ages run between twenty-five and fifty. As the biographical notes in the catalogue indicate, several of the artists have establihsed reputations, while others are so to speak, on the make." Price:

And they are remarkable stories indeed, whether about her blind, uneducated great-grandmother who, as the members of her vast family disovered, knew well the grammar of generosity and the mathematics of love; or about the hired hand, Samone, whose gifts to the family included not just his hard work but a gift of music; or about her grandfather Modesto, who so wisely placed a higher value on human relationships that on his fortune in the banks. These are but a few of the tales that evoke a strong sense of Cuba...." Price:

The Nineteenth Century Parks of Hartford: a Legacy to the Nation Alexopoulos, John Hartford, CT, USA Hartford Architecture Conservancy 1983 Soft Cover New 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Hartford Architecture Conservancy, Hartford, CT, 1983. 77 pages. New book in New condition. From the Introduction: "Many of the leading park promoters and designers of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century either advised on or worked on the plans for Hartford parks. Frederick Law Olmsted, the greatest park maker of them all, certainly advised his friend and pastor Horace Bushnell. Olmsted's sons later worked on several of Hartford's major parks. Charles Eliot, their associate, was almost wholly responsible for the design of Keney Park, and it was Jacob Weidenmann who finally assimilated the various design-competition plans to produce the final plan for Bushnell Park. All the Hartford parks embodied similar philosophies of design that formed the basis for park plans throughout the country. It is the purpose of this monograph to explain what these philosophies were, who conceived them and to show, through the case-study approach, how they were employed in the designs for each of Hartford's numerous parks." Contents are: The American Park Movement; Frederick Law Olmsted; Horace Bushnell and Bushnell Park; The Rain of Parks; Goodwin Park; Elizabeth Park; Colt Park; Pope Park; Riverside Park; Keney Park. Includes a bibliography and index. Price:
