208 Earth Matters De Rothschild, David, Consultant Editor
New York, New York, U.S.A. DK Publishing 2008 0756634350 First Edition/First Printing Hard Copy New No Jacket as Issued 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
DK Publishing, New York, 2008. 1st edition/1st printing. Book is New with slight shelf wear; not a remainder. From the publisher: "With a biome-by-biome structure that mirrors Mother Nature’s own design, Our Earth Matters is a celebration of our fragile Earth, a warning to protect it, and an inspiring source book full of ideas for making a positive change. The book begins with a brief history of our planet’s birth and development, revealing how an astonishingly unlikely series of accidents made Earth the only planet in the universe known to be suitable for life. As life flourished and spread, it changed the planet and created the "biosphere." Scientists divide the biosphere into global ecosystems, or "biomes," such as Desert, Ocean, Tropical Forest, and Grassland. Earth’s delicate ecology is the unifying theme. Each section explores the unique ecological structure of a biome and reveals how human interference can upset the balance and damage the life-support systems upon which our existence depends Reference pages make up the first part of each section, with maps showing the extent of the biome, and spreads on climate, natural history, and ecology explaining how the biome works. Subsequent spreads explore the threats arising from human activity and show how positive efforts can often overcome the threats and preserve the biome. Throughout the book, spectacular and intimate photography showcases the living world’s endless diversity and beauty, providing a compelling visual argument to support the book’s core message."

209 Principles of Human Anatomy With Synopses and Bibliography  DeGaris, Charles F.; Lachmann, Ernst; Chase, Ralph E. - SIGNED BY ALL 3 AUTHORS
Philadelphia Lea & Febiger 1939 Hard Copy Very Good  No Jacket 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Signed by All 3 Authors

Weed of Johns Hopkins Medical School referred to in the Preface in this book); front and rear boards don't lie flat. No dust jacket. From the Introduction: "The methodology of dissection...is worth a deal of careful consideration on the part of the teaching staff. From the very first the student needs to be advised on the procedure which will best promote the demonstration at hand. He does not as a rule need, or relish, lengthy discourse, such as may be had from elaborate dissecting manuals. He requires clear concise statements, which will lead him as soon as possible to the desired end and leave him with the feeling that the demonstration is esentially his own. With this specific need in mind and with the hope of aiding the student to pursue his course in some measure of self-assurance, discernment and curiosity, we . . . [provide] the following procedures of dissection." Contents are: Plan of the Work; Directions for Dissection (Dissection of the Trunk; Dissections of the Back; Dissections of the Head; Dissections of the Upper Extremities; Dissections of the Lower Extremeties; Dissections of the Joints); Synopses.

213 Bear River: Last Chance to Change Course Denton, Craig
Logan, Utah, U.S.A. Utah State University Press 2007 0874216508 Soft Cover Very Good+ Uncorrected Proof 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
Utah State University Press, Logan, UT, 2007. Uncorrected Proof. This is a New book in Very Good+ condition: light edge wear and corner wear. From the publisher: "Craig Denton notes, "Water will be the primary political, social, and economic issue in the Intermountain West in the twenty-first century." Urban Utah thirsts for the Great Salt Lake principal source, the Bear River. Plans abound to divert it for a rapidly growing Wasatch Front, as the last good option for future water. But is it? Who now uses the river and how? Who are its stakeholders? What does the Bear mean to them? What is left for further use? How do we measure the Bear's own interest, give it a voice in decisions? Craig Denton's documentary takes on these questions. He tells the story of the river and the people, of many sorts, with diverse purposes, who live and depend on it. Bear River begins in alpine snowfields, lakes, and creeks in the Uinta Mountains, flows north through Wyoming, loops south in Idaho, and enters the inland sea by way of the an environmentally critical bird refuge. Along the way it has many uses: habitat, farms, electricity, recreation, lawns and homes. Denton researches the natural and human history of the river, photographed it, interviewed many stakeholders, and tried to capture the river perspective. His photographs, printed as crisp duotones, carry us downstream, ultimately to big questions, begging to be answered soon, about what we should and can make of the Bear River."

222 Mitra-Varuna: An Essay on Two Indo-European Representations of Sovereignty  Dumezil, Georges
New York, New York, U.S.A. Zone Books 1988 0942299124 Hard Copy Very Good  Very Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
Zone Books, New York, 1988. Book is in Very Good condition: light discoloration on boards; binding is tight and pages are clean and bright. Dust jacket is in Very Good condition: one tiny closed tear; light rubbing. From the publisher: "In his work the late Georges Dumézil, arguably the most important modern mythologist, demonstrated that every Indo-European religious and social system was structured according to three primary functions: sovereignty, war, and fertility. Mitra-Varuna, a penetrating inquiry into the first of these functions - religious and political sovereignty - is among the first of his texts to implement this revolutionary theory. Dumézil shows how, from Vedic India to Ireland from Caucasia to Rome, and from Iran to Old Germany, the sovereign gods and heroes always appear in couples: the creative but violent legislator and his counterpart, the conservative guarantor of world order. In effect, Mitra-Varuna presents an archaeology of representations of religious and political power."

From the publisher: "Niche tells the story of an artist who meets a scientist and through the encounter makes a hypothesis: If the artist became a stem cell and then divided into a neuron, would he discover the meaning of intelligence? David Edwards and Jay Cantor introduce a new fiction genre -- the novel catalogue -- to coincide with the opening of the new art and design innovation center in Paris, Le Laboratoire. In the novel catalogue, the process through which creators create matters as much as the works that result from the creation. The novel catalogue fictionalizes the creative process of an exhibition season which opens with the artistic outcome of an experiment between Fabrice Hyber, a French artist, and Robert Langer of MIT."

The Camera Guide is as scrupulous in fully describing the camera and advising on its use as the very best type of manufacturer's book of instructions. It is, however, more critical than they could be. No Camera Guide will attempt to camouflage the limitations of a camera or make efforts to sell an endless chain of accessories. It is straightforward, practical and devoted to the questions of how to take the best photographs with a particular camera, rather than to praise of it." Gift wrap and gift card available.

Abrams 2008 0810-99525-5 Hard Copy New New 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Palmer, Rob, Lasa, Miguel, Hui, KK, Photographers
Abrams, 2008. Hard cover. Book is New; still in original shrink wrap; not a remainder. From the publisher: "When we imagine birds, we think of them soaring through the sky, high above our heads--yet photographs of birds in the air are surprisingly rare. On Feathered Wings features the work of seven photographers who have spent their lives camping out, donning waders, and lying in wait for the greatest shots of birds doing what they do best: flying! Selected by birder and photographer Richard Ettlinger, these gorgeous, often thrilling images show hunters, migrators, waterfowl, and songbirds living on the wing: hunting, feeding, fighting, traveling, or just gliding along. An essay by Ettlinger gives an overview of the mechanics and evolution of bird flight. From falcons and eagles to swallows and hummingbirds, On Feathered Wings serves up a rich collection of images that is sure to delight birders both novice and veteran, and anyone who has ever looked to the skies in wonder."

247 Embodying Honor: Fertility, Foreignness, and Regeneration in Eastern Sudan Fadlalla, Amal Hassan
Madison, WI, U.S.A. University of Wisconsin Press 2007 0299223809 First Edition/First Printing Hard Copy New No Jacket as Issued 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
University of Wisconsin Press, Madison, 2007. 1st edition/1st printing. This is a New book; no dust jacket as issued; not a remainder. From the publisher: "In the Red Sea Hills of eastern Sudan, where poverty, famines, and conflict loom large, women struggle to gain the status of responsible motherhood through bearing and raising healthy children, especially sons. But biological fate can be capricious in impoverished settings. Amidst struggle for survival and expectations of heroic mothering, women face realities that challenge their ability to fulfill their prescribed roles. Even as the effects of modernity and development, global inequities, and exclusionary government policies challenge traditional ways of life in eastern Sudan and throughout many parts of Africa, reproductive traumas--infertility, miscarriage, children's illnesses, and mortality--disrupt women's reproductive health and impede their efforts to achieve the status that comes with fertility and motherhood. In 'Embodying Honor' Amal Hassan Fadlalla finds that the female body is the locus of anxieties about foreign dangers and diseases, threats perceived to be disruptive to morality, feminine identities, and social well-being. As a 'northern Sudanese' viewed as an outsider in this region of her native country, Fadlalla presents an intimate portrait and thorough analysis that offers an intriguing commentary on the very notion of what constitutes the 'foreign.' Fadlalla shows how Muslim Hadendowa women manage health and reproductive suffering in their quest to become "responsible" mothers and valued members of their com
