706 The Young Puritans in King Philip's War  Smith, Mary P. Wells

Binders Jan. 1935"; foxing on page edges and on a number of pages; binding is tight and pages are clean. No dust jacket. Illustrated by L. J. Bridgman. Young Puritans Series. From the Preface: "This story continues the adventures and experiences of 'The Young Puritans of Old Hadley,' its object being to make realto young readers the incidents connected with King Philip's War in the Connecticut Valley. it is impossible to study the history of this period without strong impressions of its romance and picturesqueness. Many a line in Judd or Sheldon, seemingly a dry statement of facts, glows with highest romance if we but stop a moment to picture to ourselves the actual conditions and surroundings. In these days of war, it may be of interest to see how war was conducted in this country by our forefathers, in times when not only were there no railroads, no telegraphs, no rifles, but also no bridges, no roads, save Indian footpaths through the all-surrounding wilderness; when, in fact, all things regarded as essentials in modern warfare were wanting. But then as now hearts beat high with heroism, and brave youths were prompt to do, to dare, to die if need be, for home and country. Hobson, and the hundreds of noble young patriots whose bodies lie to-day on Santiago's hillsides, had their prototypes in Jonathan Wells and his comrades of King Philip's War." From Wikipedia: "King Philip's War (Metacom's War) was an armed conflict between Native American inhabitants of present-day southern New England and English colonists and their Native American allies from 1675 - 1676. Nearly one in ten persons overall among Native Americans and English were wounded or killed. The war is named after the main leader of the Indian side, Metacomet, Metacom, or Pometacom, known to the English as 'King Philip'."

712 Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Philosophy; Fear and Trembling in Sunnydale  South, James B., Editor
Chicago Open Court 2003 0-8126-9531-3 First Edition/Stated First Printing Soft Cover As New  8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
335 pages. 1st edition/stated 1st printing. From the Introduction: The twenty-two chapters of this volume all bring sophisticated philosophical concepts in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy to bear on BtVS. Some chapters start with a difficult philosophical issue, say friendship or punishment, and show how BtVS can help us to better understand the issue by providing us with examples and themes from the show. In other chapters, the authors use philosophical concepts to understand the stories and motifs present in BtVS. In this latter task, the goal is to help the reader understand how philosophical concepts and theories intersect with particular cases. So, for example, we night wonder about the prob lem of human irrationality or the problem of nihilism and look to the series to see how BtVS has grappled with those themes, thereby deepening our understanding of the abstract philosophical concepts at issue. Finally, some of the chapters also reflect more explicitly on what it means to turn to a television show for philosophical stimulation." Book in As New condition. Gift wrap and gift card available.

From the publisher: "An astonishing voyage reveals remarkable new and unusual life forms. The breathtaking beauty of marine life is profusely illustrated in this outstanding book. Five years in the making, Oceanic Wilderness visits the Earth's limits to shed light on the ocean's deepest depths. From aerial views to cavernous reefs, and from mid-ocean to tropical lagoons, this book is a fascinating photographic journey to environments from around the globe, including the Caribbean, the Central, South and West Pacific, Japan, temperate and tropical Australia, Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Oceanic Wilderness explores the oceans' creatures and plants through the eyes of one of the world's most prominent undersea photographers. The photographs provide a vibrant feast of form, color and motion. Colors are almost outrageously stunning -- but accurate. Some of the subjects are as small as 2 mm and have been captured with a microscopic lens. Some images show day views and night views of the same place to reveal surprising, unseen secrets. A number of subjects were unknown to science before Roger Steene captured them on film. With more than 600 vivid color photographs and accurate descriptive text, Oceanic Wilderness demystifies the planet's darkest frontier, revealing surprising secrets and exquisite beauty. This is an ideal book for naturalists, travelers and divers -- and anyone else with a passion for marine conservation and photography. Highlights: * Features subjects never before photographed * Explores the Caribbean Sea, the Central, South and West Pacific, Japan, temperate and tropical Australia, Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea * Captures the stunning beauty and colors of the deep reef * Provides views of oceanic worlds from above * Presents life in and around tropical islands and deep reefs * Reveals marine life in lagoons and tide pools, and among kelp and coral * Shows microscopic organisms inhabiting a drop of saltwater * Includes photographs of the ocean during the day and through the night."

732 Shape: Talking about Seeing and Doing Stiny, George
Cambridge, Massachusetts USA The MIT Press 2006 0262-69367-4 Soft Cover Very Good+ 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 2006. Soft cover. Book is in Very Good+ condition: light shelf wear; not a remainder. From the publisher: "In Shape, George Stiny argues that seeing shapes--with all their changeability and ambiguity--is an inexhaustible source of creative ideas. Understanding shapes, he says, is a useful way to understand what is possible in design. Shapes are devices for visual expression just as symbols are devices for verbal expression. Stiny develops a unified scheme that includes both visual expression with shapes and verbal expression with signs. The relationships -- and equivalencies -- between the two kinds of expressive devices make design comparable to other professional practices that rely more on verbal than visual expression. Design uses shapes while business, engineering, law, mathematics, and philosophy turn mainly to symbols, but the difference, says Stiny, isn't categorical. Designing is a way of thinking. Designing, Stiny argues, is calculating with shapes, calculating without equations and numbers but still according to rules. Stiny shows that the mechanical process of calculation is actually a creative process when you calculate with shapes--when you can reason with your eyes, when you learn to see instead of count. The book takes the idea of design as calculation from mere heuristic or metaphor to a rigorous relationship in which design and calculation each inform and enhance the other. Stiny first demonstrates how seeing and counting differ when you use rules--that is, what it means to calculate with your eyes--then shows how to calculate with shapes, providing formal details. He gives practical applications in design with specific visual examples. The book is extraordinarily visual, with many drawings throughout--drawings punctuated with words. You have to see this book in order to read it."
