A Palestine Affair : A Novel Wilson, Jonathan - 1ST EDITION SIGNED BY AUTHOR New York, New York, U.S.A. Pantheon Books 2003 0375422099 Stated 1st Edition/1st Printing Hard Copy Very Good Very Good 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Signed by Author Pantheon Books, New York, 2003. Signed by author on title page (flat-signed, meaning that the author's signature is present, but not an inscription to any person). Stated 1st edition/1st printing. Book is in Very Good condition: boards have light edge wear; binding is tight, and the pages are clean and bright. Dust jacket is in Very Good condition: chip at the bottom of the fold at the front flap; light rubbing; not price-clipped; sticker on front saying "autographed copy". From the dust jacket: "This swift and sensual novel of passion and politics transports us to British Palestine, where the Arabs, the British, and the Jews mingle in a scene of colonial excess and unease. It is 1924, and Mark Bloomberg, a disillusioned London painter, arrives in Jerusalem to take up a propaganda commission. When he and his American wife, Joyce, accidentally witness the murder of a prominent Orthodox Jew near their cottage, they become embroiled in an investigation that will test their marriage and their characters. Joyce, an ardent Zionist, is pulled into an affair with Robert Kirsch, the British policeman investigating the case, while Bloomberg, transfixed by the desert light, attempts to capture on canvas the complex, shifting truths of the region. Like Kirsch, whose brother was killed in France in 1918, all of the characters here have come to Palestine to escape the grief of the First World War, and are forced to confront their principles and their hearts in the midst of a culture in the throes of painful emergence. Lushly detailed and compellingly cinematic, A Palestine Affair illuminates a lesser-known aspect of the history of the Middle East as it tells a powerful story in which love proves to be, ultimately, a force as strong as politics" Price:

The Shepherd of the Hills Wright, Harold Bell Branson, Missouri, U.S.A. Shepherd of the Hills Historical Society 1987 0970260903 Hard Copy Near Fine No Jacket 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Signed by Actors The Shepherd of the Hills Historical Society, Branson, Missouri, 1987. Inscribed on the front end page and front fly leaf by 17 actors who were part of The Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Theatre in Branson, Missouri in 2003. Book is in Near Fine condition. From the publisher: "Originally published in 1907, 'The Shepherd of the Hills' is Harold Bell Wright's most famous work . . . . Wright spins a tale of universal truths across the years to the modern-day reader. His Eden in the Ozarks has a bountiful share of life's enchantments, but is not without its serpents. While Wright rejoices in the triumphs, grace, and dignity of his characters, he has not naively created a pastoral fantasyland where the pure at heart are spared life's struggles and pains. Refusing to yield to the oft-indulged temptation of painting for the reader the simple life of country innocents, Wright forthrightly shows the passions and the life-and-death struggles that go on even in the fairest of environments that man invades." Gift wrap and gift card available. The shepherd, an elderly, mysterious, learned man, escapes the buzzing restlessness of the city to live in the backwoods neighborhood of Mutton Hollow in the Ozark hills. There he encounters Jim Lane, Grant Matthews, Sammy, Young Matt, and other residents of the village, and gradually learns to find a peace about the losses he has borne and has yet to bear. Through the shepherd and those around him, Wright assembles here a gentle and utterly masterful commentary on strength and weakness, failure and success, tranquility and turmoil, and punishment and absolution. This tale of life in the Ozarks continues to draw thousands of devotees to outdoor performances in Branson, Missouri, where visitors can also see the cabin where the real Old Matt and Aunt Mollie lived." The book, originally published in 1907, was made into a movie of the same name in 1941 with a cast including John Wayne, Betty Field, Sammy Lane, Harry Carey, Beulah Bondi, Marjorie Main, and Ward Bond. Background Noise/Ruido De Fondo Yurkievich, Saul North Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A. Catbird Press 2003 0945774583 Stated 1st Edition Soft Cover New 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Catbird Press, North Haven, CT, 2003. Stated 1st edition. Book is New; some shelf wear. Soft cover. From the publisher: "Background Noise introduces to the English-speaking world the poetry of Argentinian writer Saúl Yurkievich, in a bilingual edition. His poetry is a play of language and ideas, with language leading the way. His longer poems are collages, full of similarities and contrasts that remain unresolved, not circumscribed by a determination to harmonize or integrate. Most important to Yurkievich are sound and rhythm; in his poems, sound often leads to sense. They are like jazz solos, spontaneously flowing in response to nothing but themselves. And therefore, they are great joys to read aloud. It is amazing how well Cola Franzen has captured this spontaneity in her translations. Yet beneath the pleasures of Yurkievich's poetic play, there is a troubling despair. There is a sense in the poems of our inability to know, to find, to get what we desire. Things are not what we wish they would be, and those things include ourselves. One poems ends, 'grasp it / clasp this almost nearly nothing.' More than anything, there is a feeling of the world as jumble, as full of disorder. The title poem begins, 'tenebrous turbid turmoil turbulence,' an incantation of chaos. In this sense, Yurkievich's work is the opposite of lyric poetry, which seeks to bring order to disorderly things such as love and nature. Yurkievich both celebrates and laments the world's pandemonium. He writes in the tradition of the early Neruda, Huidobro, and Vallejo. Also included in this volume is an interview with Yurkievich and his friend, the late fiction writer Julio Cortázar, about their approaches to writing." Price:
